Yes, ‘Full Metal Jacket’ (1987).
Why? I was watching it the other night and it occurred to me, ‘what are we fighting for’? As a movement, the 2A movement that is, what’s it fighting for?
I find it difficult to call it a movement really, because there doesn’t seem to be any cohesive message or goal. “Defend the Second Amendment!”… Nice, but what’s that mean? What part of the Second Amendment are we supposed to “defend”, as we don’t have a fraction of the 2A rights that the Founders intended we should have. So “defend”?…
What’s the NRA want? I’m a life member and it beats me. GOA? They talk a lot, and what they talk about, is mostly politically impossible legislation, in what seems to be an effort to merely get gun owners excited to donate, then down and out when it fails so they’ll donate some more. SAF says they win court cases, yet their home state of Washington is one of the worst states in the Republic, by 2A standards, and all other measures.
What do gun owners want? Do they even know the Second Amendment is about “arms” and not merely “guns”? Most don’t seem to. They seem largely content with “mother may I” slips to carry a Glock inside their waist bands and screw on a gun muffler to their semi auto AR15’s.
There’s an article on Ammoland by David Codrea, https://www.ammoland.com/2025/08/east-harlem-a-microcosm-of-what-total-democrat-control-of-country-will-look-like/ Where a reader in the comments section wants a solution.
I bring up the Ammoland comments section, not for drama’s sake, but to illustrate the issue, what are we fighting for? There’s no one solution to our problem. This country is rotting away. The Second Amendment infringements are but one symptom of that rot. Governments fear an armed and educated citizenry. They prefer people who are drugged and stupid, as they are easier to control.
To fix anything, one must first know something’s broken. Then, how it broke. Then how to fix it. There seems to be a serious lack of historical knowledge on the pro 2A side of things. Proof of this is the obsession with the “in common use” legal theory and the “dangerous and unusual” legal theory. Where in the Second Amendment does it say or allude to anything which would support either theory? No where.
There’s no simple solution to this problem. But I think a good place to start is by holding the Republicants responsible for their 2A betrayals. Many on the right seem to idolize Trump the way the left idolized Obama. Now everyone wants a hero and to be apart of a team, but, we can’t get anywhere if we don’t point out the Republicants screwed us over with their watered down versions of HPA and SHORT. They’re so watered down as to be rendered meaningless. As Codrea’s pointed out, Trump can’t even get around to allowing soldiers to carry guns! https://waronguns.com/fort-stewart-shootings-recall-forgotten-trump-commitment/ We mustn’t have rose colored glasses on. We must be able to look at politicians, and policy and their promises objectively, and cheer when they do good, and boo when they do bad. That goes for all politicians, at all levels.
Someone will no doubt get his panties in a bind, because I’m pointing out faults of Republicants. But, what’s the alternative to the communists, AKA Democrats? Nothing. So we must hold the Republicants responsible for their inaction’s and failures. For instance we’re told there’s a Second Amendment Task Force(Farce). So why hasn’t the ATF’s national gun registry been destroyed? We all know it exists, the ATF has admitted it too. In addition to being un-constitutional, it’s also illegal. All Bondi has to do is march in and destroy it. But she wasn’t. And Trump hasn’t ordered her to. And yet, all this and other things, and 2A groups, are in a constant race with each other to see who can fawn the most over Trump.
Gun owners delivered control of this late great Republic to the Republicans. What’s that accomplished so far?
If this seems like a rambling and confusing blog post that’s because, it was meant to be. Like from ‘Full Metal Jacket’ (1987), the “BORN TO KILL” on his helmet, the “peace” symbol on his flak vest, and the “duality of man”… What are we fighting for?
Equip, train, pray and never disarm.
