Thoughts And Observations From The Woods Vol. 2

Sunday I went shooting. Wow, that was tough. For the last five summers or so, we keep getting inundated with Canada’s wild fire smoke. They manage their forests as well as California does.

With Federal American Eagle 115gr FMJ, the Glock 34 Gen. 5 shot perfect… Unlike Fiocchi 124gr FMJ. The Federal was consistent, no weak obviously way below spec powder charge one round, followed by what felt like a +P the next.

Just to put it through its paces I shot a case of the Federal through it. No issues. No hiccups. None. Though, the Federal sure was smoky! They all shot the same, never had to adjust my hold from one magazine to the next.

Aiming this Glock 34 is easier than a G17, the extra sight radius really helps. Plus the lighter, smoother trigger makes 20-25 yard shots much easier as well. Shooting fairly fast, it wasn’t hard keeping every shot on the paper plates I had tacked up. Although as the day wore on, my eyes sure did burn from that damn smoke. Now if Triple K can just deliver the holster for the G34… Curious how neither Midway, nor Brownells, nor Bianchi nor Galco had holsters for a G34. Maybe that’s why Glock’s discontinuing them… Maybe sales really are that bad.

I had so much fun shooting the G34 I nearly forgot about the MP15-3 and the Tikka T1X. Thank God the doctors are fixing my eyes so I can shoot a hand gun again.

The MP15-3… Now that’s a strange one. Strange groups. I always shoot Win. Lake City M855, which I know isn’t “accurate” due to the steel core penetraitor, but from seeing how it performs on logs, and things, compared to Win. M193, I’ll take a slight loss in “accuracy” for the extra penetration.

But, I did finish adjusting the scope. Elevation was ok, 36/300 yard zero, now if I can only get access to a clear cut that’s 300 yards wide to test the 300 yard part… But shooting at 100 yards it needed a little windage tweaking. About an inch to the right, and 30 round groups averaged dead center, but four inches high, which is what I expected, but, wide groups.

I’m thinking it’s the scope. Looking through it. it seemed dusty and I took eye glass wipe/cleaner to the lenses, but that didn’t change anything. The Canadian smoke was high, not low, so it didn’t make visibility hard, though it sure made the eyes painful as the day carried on.

The magnification dial, seemed very loose, and I’ve shot this carbine/scope alot, and I don’t remember it being loose like this last week. I’m wondering if a seal is breaking, and if I’m seeing a hint of fog begin inside the lenses. I can’t remember how old this scope is, I think I had used it and took it off a rifle, before putting it on the MP15-3.

It’s a Vortex Diamondback 3-9x 40mm. The mount and rings are tight, plus nothing to suggest the scope’s loose, as I could group, just not as well as I normally can.

The barrel isn’t pencil thin, but it’s not heavy either, and more like a mid-weight, and continuous, not like a stupid government barrel where it’s heavy at the muzzle. It’s not chromed. I’ve shot it a lot. I haven’t kept track, but, it’s gotta be over well over 10,000 rounds by now… Easier to shoot more in the winter… Barrels are slow to heat, and fast to cool, unlike in June. I don’t think it’s a barrel issue though.

If next weekend I can get out, and there’s no smoke making my eyes burn and the scope’s still a bit fuzzy, then I’ll change scopes, and see.

I never did get around to shooting the Tikka T1X. That Glock 34, was just too fun. Especially when I used it to shoot two watermelons. After each of the first few shots on both melons, I’d go look at the damage, those plain Jane 115gr FMJ’s really caused cracks, and blew fair sized chunks out the back, I was surprised, I didn’t think they’d do half the damage they did. After about five more or less center hits to each, they’d fully chunked apart. Each melon took about a mag and a half to fully destroy, shooting the chunks. I wonder if the critters will eat the melon meat? They never did last year, not that I blame them. And yes, to the two vegetarians out there, I took great pride in blasting those two melons in my very scientific study.

The only good melon is a dead melon.

P.S. No un-commanded discharges with my Glock… (Looking at you Sig the big pharma of the gun world, and your special immunity from lawsuits https://www.seacoastonline.com/story/news/2025/05/28/gun-manufacturers-limited-liability-nh-bill-sig-sauer/83898390007/)
