Ronald Reagan, the “conservative” icon, when he was the Republican governor of California, signed into law the Mulford Act in 1967, which required a permit to carry a gun in public. The reason being there were too many armed blacks around. I guess Republicans were and perhaps still are, just as worried about blacks being independent, and self reliant as the Democrats. So the Mulford Act made “mother may I” slips the law in California.
Later, as we all know, as part of the Firearm Owners Protection Act in 1986, which Reagan as president signed, was the Hughes Amendment, which banned all new machine guns. Ironic, “protection”, and civil disarmament in the same bill… So much for his warning about the nine most terrifying words, “I’m from the government and I’m here to help.”
Are you seeing a pattern here?
Now, for this doozy I found last night, a clip of a speech Reagan gave in 1991 at George Washington University, he supported the Brady Bill, no commentary is needed, just watch,
Equip, train, pray, and never disarm.
