There’s nothing like seeing Duke, wearing a Green Beret, carrying an XM16E1, and flying around Vietnam in a Huey, hunting for Charlie.
Having known Vietnam vets, and as a boy, at an airshow with Dad, watching a National Guard Huey land right in front of us, and the pilot pick me up and set me in the pilots seat, led to an endless fascination with Vietnam War history.
And yes, I still remember hearing that whoomp whoomp whoomp sound unique to the Huey, way off on the horizon, well before we ever saw the chopper.
The Duke, in ‘The Green Berets’ (1968), when questioned by a bleeding heart reporter about his handling of a Viet Cong spy, and how there’s still such a thing as due process, the Duke fired back with one of his most iconic lines,
“Out here due process is a bullet!”
